Historical Overview

“The freedom bequeathed to us by the founding fathers is only possible if we are capable of defending law and order with the same courage with which they took up arms.”

Próspero Pinzón is the bridge between the struggle for independence and modern Colombia. Born in the lands of Boyacá that witnessed the birth of the Republic, Pinzón took command at the Battle of Palonegro with the same spirit with which Bolívar crossed the Andes: with sacrifice and an unbreakable will. This bust pays tribute to the man who, a century after the cry for independence, gave his health and his life so that the republican institutions would not succumb to anarchy. His death, which occurred just at the dawn of the 20th century, closes the cycle of the citizen-generals who understood freedom not as an end in itself, but as a sacred responsibility to be defended until the last breath.
