The presence of this work in the Independence Gallery reminds us of the spiritual dimension of the struggle for freedom. During the 19th century, religion served as a unifying force for the patriotic troops; men of all social classes and backgrounds united under the mantle of the “Morenita” in search of protection. This painting of the Virgin of Guadalupe represents the hope that illuminated the battlefields and the comfort for the families awaiting the return of their heroes. It is a tribute to faith as the driving force of resistance and to the cultural heritage that, beyond political borders, unites all the nations that dreamed of and achieved their autonomy.
