Historical Overview

In the heart of Machetá, a young woman barely sixteen years old became the guardian angel of freedom. Candelaria Forero, one of those “Juanas” whom history sometimes tries to obscure, was much more than a messenger: she was the lifeblood of the Almeida guerrillas. Through trails and swamps, Candelaria evaded the Spanish siege to bring weapons, clothing, and hope to those fighting in the thicket. Her capture at such a young age did not dampen her spirit; facing the firing squad in 1817, her young blood watered the town square, transforming her name into an eternal flame that today illuminates an entire municipality. Candelaria teaches us that to love one’s homeland, one does not need a long life, but rather a heart as vast as the sky.
